If you are planning to stay in the Netherlands for a short period of time, you can get a travel insurance in your home country with coverage for your stay in the Netherlands. Travel insurance in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands you can also find companies that are specialized in offering travel insurances especially for foreign students in the Netherlands. These companies are for example: Insurance Passport for Students (IPS) en AON. If you are planning to live in the Netherlands for a longer period and you are planning to go on holiday to other countries during that stay, it is possible to get a travel insurance at a Dutch company.
Coverage of student travel insurances
In general the coverage of a student travel insurance is as follows:
- Coverage for theft, damage and lost of your baggage
- Medical emergency expense
- Coverage of the cost of medical care at the doctor or in the hospital
- Emergency medical transportation
- Coverage of the cost of transportation when you are seriously injured or ill.
The coverage of student travel insurances can differ between the insurance companies. We recommend you to study the coverage of some travel insurances before you make a decision.
Insurers could have policies were certain amount of money is deducted from the claim you make. This amount of money you have to pay yourself. In general the policy is: the higher your own risk, the lower the premium you have to pay. The amount of the own risk is generally between the 50 euro and 125 euro.

If you are planning to travel for a longer period or if you are planning to do more trips in a year, it could be profitable to get an annual travel insurance. The coverage of this insurance is valid for all your trips during one year. The premium of this insurance is between € 24,- and € 35,- a year.
Global traveler insurance
Especially for students who are planning on studying abroad or for young global travellers, there are traveller insurances. You can get these insurances for a period from two months till two years. The cost of this global traveller insurance is between € 7,- and € 15,- a month.
